RDU's $500M Expansion Takes Flight

Exciting news is on the horizon for the Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) as plans for a new $500 million runway take flight. The Federal Aviation Administration recently gave the green light for this ambitious project, marking a significant milestone for the region's aviation infrastructure.

Scheduled for completion by 2028, the new primary runway is poised to become the linchpin of connectivity in the Triangle area. According to Michael Landguth, President and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority, "RDU's new primary runway will be the most important two miles of pavement in the Triangle." This critical addition will bolster economic opportunities, ensuring RDU maintains its vital transatlantic connections while accommodating greater passenger and cargo traffic from long-haul flights.

The current 10,000-foot runway, a stalwart of the 1980s, has admirably served its purpose for almost four decades. However, the demands of modern aviation necessitate an upgrade. The new runway will be strategically located approximately 537 feet west of the current site, allowing the existing runway to remain operational throughout the construction process.

This relocation also paves the way for future expansion, with additional gates slated for Terminal 2. The FAA's determination to extend the runway to 10,639 feet will provide crucial extra distance for takeoffs and landings, further enhancing operational efficiency.

The investment in this state-of-the-art runway underscores RDU's commitment to staying at the forefront of regional aviation. By 2028, travelers can anticipate smoother operations, expanded routes, and increased accessibility, all of which will undoubtedly fuel growth and prosperity in the Triangle area.
