For those of us in the greater Chapel Hill–Pittsboro corridor, the Asteria development in Chatham County continues to generate plenty of questions. The latest round of announcements gives us our clearest picture yet of what the Storyliving by Disney community will look like when it arrives.

Construction is Underway

Construction on Asteria began in June 2025, with plans to develop more than 4,000 homes across 1,500 acres. Home sales are expected to begin in 2027, with residents anticipated as early as fall 2028.

The Second Star Club

The centerpiece of Disney's April 2026 announcement is the Second Star Club, the community's planned social and recreational hub. Inspired by the celestial compass in Walt Disney Animation Studios' 1953 animated classic Peter Pan, the club was designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and will feature a collection of indoor and outdoor areas intended to encourage discovery and lifelong learning.

Planned spaces include:

Aster Green — An expansive gathering lawn at the center of the club, intended for pick-up soccer, family picnics, movie nights, and community gatherings.

The Studios — A creative workshop space where members can use high-tech tools like laser engravers and fabric printers, with a nod to local traditions such as woodworking and quilting.

The Wellness Center — A fitness and wellness facility with outdoor yoga space, a lap pool, workout equipment, and a smoothie and juice bar.

Marquet Hall — A signature restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, positioned as a gathering spot for meals and community events.

Piedmont Proper — A versatile event pavilion featuring wood details and rosemaling artwork, designed for member celebrations and club programming.

The campus will also include an adult-only pool, a family-friendly pool and playground, and tennis and pickleball courts.

Lost Key Cottage

One of the more distinctive details in the announcement is Lost Key Cottage, a storybook-inspired five-bedroom home where members and their guests can step into a setting inspired by Never Land, with every room designed around a narrative theme. Members will be able to rent it for family gatherings, milestone celebrations, birthday parties, and overnight stays.

Design Philosophy

Disney Imagineers have incorporated references to characters and themes inspired by Walt Disney's love of nature and curiosity, with nods to films such as Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland, and Bambi woven throughout the spaces.

Claire Bilby, Senior Vice President of Storyliving by Disney, has described the approach as combining the traditions of the Piedmont region with Disney's storytelling and service.
