Italian Restaurants in the Triangle

Italian cuisine holds a special place in the hearts of many. Maybe it’s the variety, from the freshness of Tuscany to the heartiness of homestyle American Italian. Maybe it’s the spiciness of a good marinara or fresh pesto. Maybe it’s all the carbs, everyone’s favorite treat. Regardless of why you love Italian, the Triangle can satiate your craving!

Il Palio (Chapel Hill)

North Carolina has exactly one AAA Four Diamond Italian restaurant: this one. Chapel Hill’s, Il Palio might be in a college town, but its cuisine is all grown up. The short and sophisticated menu follows a traditional Italian three course format, and all of them are superb.

Fresh pasta options are creative and exotic: truffle mushroom with pine nuts, guanciale (pork cheek) and dried hot pepper. Entrees focus on seafood, but the ribeye with gorgonzola butter is equally tempting. Obviously, reservations are recommended.

Vic’s (Raleigh)

Set in the market-esque ambience of Downtown Raleigh’s Historic City Market, Vic’s Ristorante Italiano feels as Italian as it tastes. It’s been a local favorite for 30 years, and it’s easy to see why. Most of the dishes lean towards the hearty American variety, but the vast menu captures much of the Old World: puttanesca, Milanese piccata.

Obviously the pizza menu is worth a look too, with the restaurant specializing in thin crust New York Style. Don’t miss the Frutti di Mare, a pie loaded up with clams and mussels.

Mothers and Sons (Durham)

Want the atmosphere of Vic’s, but with the upscale flavors of Il Palio? Mothers and Sons should have it covered. Set in a cozy wood-filled dining room, you’ll get to experience familiar flavors with a dash of new experiences.

That balance is echoed in the menu. You could start with prosciutto…or go for rabbit liver pate. You could slurp down some rigatoni and red sauce…or opt for squid ink linguine. The eggplant parmesan sounds great, but what about that braised rabbit? It’s a great spot when you want to push yourself a little.
